The Call (1902)

Paul Gauguin | Post-Impressionism | Oil on canvas

Two barefoot women stand as if on sacred ground, and one points to someone outside the picture, as if answering a call. Gauguin painted this on a remote island in Polynesia just one year before he died, working from memory and imagination to make a mysterious, dreamlike scene.

Did you know? The woman who points was borrowed from a figure on the Parthenon frieze in ancient Greece! Gauguin often found ideas in ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian art.
