Isle of the Dead by Arnold Böcklin
Isle of the Dead (1883)
Arnold Böcklin | Symbolism | Oil on wood
A small boat glides across still, dark water toward a mysterious rocky island with tall dark trees. It looks like a secret place from a spooky fairy tale!
Did you know? Böcklin painted five versions of this mysterious island. Starting with this one, a tomb cut into the rocks on the right carries his own initials, A.B.! Years later, the composer Rachmaninoff wrote music inspired by a black-and-white print of it.
