The Last Judgment by Michelangelo
The Last Judgment (1541)
Michelangelo | Renaissance | Fresco
This giant painting covers the whole altar wall of the Sistine Chapel! It shows what Michelangelo imagined would happen at the end of the world, with over 300 figures swirling across the wall.
Did you know? The Pope's master of ceremonies grumbled that there were far too many people without clothes. In 1564, church leaders ordered the boldest figures covered, and the painter Daniele da Volterra added cloth over many of them. Ever after, he was nicknamed "Il Braghettone": the pants-painter!
