Gardener's House at Antibes by Claude Monet
Gardener's House at Antibes (1888)
Claude Monet | Impressionism | Oil on canvas
In 1888, Monet spent four months in Antibes, on the Mediterranean coast of southeastern France. This canvas shows a gardener's house with an orange-pink tiled roof, set against the sea and the distant Alps. Thick, bright paint captures the strong midday light, and small green dabs on the slim trees hint that spring is on its way.
Did you know? Monet painted more than 30 canvases during his stay in Antibes, even though strong winds sometimes threatened to knock over his easel!
