Narcissus by Caravaggio

Narcissus (1599)

Caravaggio | Baroque | Oil on canvas

A boy kneels at the edge of a dark pool and stares at his own reflection in the water. In the old Roman story told by the poet Ovid, Narcissus falls in love with his own reflection. The real boy and his mirror image make a closed loop, like a ring!

Did you know? Art detectives still argue about who painted this one. Many experts credit Caravaggio, but others think it was by a later painter named Giovanni Antonio Galli, nicknamed Spadarino, and the museum's label names them both.
