The Oath of the Horatii by Jacques-Louis David

The Oath of the Horatii (1784)

Jacques-Louis David | Neoclassicism | Oil on canvas

Three brothers stretch out their arms toward the swords their father holds up, promising to fight for Rome, while women cry nearby.

Did you know? David made up this moment! The oath does not appear in the old Roman tellings of the story. And although he was a French painter, he painted it in Rome, not Paris.
