The Origin of the Milky Way by Tintoretto
The Origin of the Milky Way (1575)
Tintoretto | Mannerism | Oil on canvas
An ancient myth comes to life! In the story, Jupiter sneaks baby Hercules to the breast of his sleeping wife Juno so the baby can drink her milk and become immortal. Juno wakes up, and the milk that spurts upward becomes the Milky Way!
Did you know? This painting has been trimmed! About a third of the canvas was cut off the bottom sometime before 1727. In the story, milk that fell downward turned into lilies, and the missing piece showed white flowers too!
