Portrait of Madame Récamier by Jacques-Louis David
Portrait of Madame Récamier (1800)
Jacques-Louis David | Neoclassicism | Oil on canvas
A beautiful woman in a simple white dress reclines on an elegant couch. Juliette Récamier was a banker's wife who ran a famous salon, a gathering of guests who came to her home in Paris to talk!
Did you know? The couch she's lying on became so famous that a backless sofa with a curved headrest is still called a 'récamier' today. The portrait was never finished: legend has it she lost patience with slow David and asked his student François Gérard to paint her instead!
