The Raft of the Medusa by Théodore Géricault
The Raft of the Medusa (1819)
Théodore Géricault | Romanticism | Oil on canvas
Survivors on a raft wave desperately at a ship on the horizon. After 13 days lost at sea, they spot a tiny ship far away!
Did you know? This was based on a real shipwreck! Géricault talked with two survivors, and with their help and a carpenter's, he had a detailed model of the raft built. He even shaved his head and lived almost like a hermit in his studio for months while he painted.
