For his teacher Chen Kuan's seventieth birthday, the Ming painter Shen Zhou raised a mountain. He was 40 when he painted this scroll in 1467: nearly two meters (more than six feet) tall, with towering cliffs and a waterfall plunging down them, in brushwork that echoes the older master Wang Meng. A birthday card you could get lost in. National Palace Museum, Taipei.
