The Bedroom by Vincent van Gogh

The Bedroom (1888)

Vincent van Gogh | Post-Impressionism | Oil on canvas

Van Gogh's cozy bedroom in Arles has a yellow bed with a scarlet blanket, two chairs, and pictures on the walls. The walls look blue today, but Van Gogh called them pale violet: the paint has faded. The real room was an odd trapezoid shape, which is one reason everything looks a little wonky!

Did you know? Van Gogh painted The Bedroom three times, and this one is the first! It was damaged by a flood of the Rhône River while he was in the hospital, and the next year he painted two more, including a smaller one for his mother and sister.
