The Goldfinch by Carel Fabritius
The Goldfinch (1654)
Carel Fabritius | Baroque | Oil on panel
A tiny colorful bird sits on its perch, attached by a little chain. It looks so real you might think it could fly away!
Did you know? Fabritius died in 1654, the same year he painted this, when a gunpowder store blew up in Delft. The blast destroyed about a quarter of the city, including his studio and many of his paintings. This little bird is one of the few works by him that survive!
