The Swing by Jean-Honoré Fragonard
The Swing (1767)
Jean-Honoré Fragonard | Rococo | Oil on canvas
A lady in a fluffy pink dress swings high in a magical garden. Her shoe flies off into the air! What fun!
Did you know? The story goes that a courtier first asked another painter, Gabriel François Doyen, to paint him and his sweetheart on a swing pushed by a bishop. Doyen said no, so Fragonard got the job, and he swapped the bishop for a smiling older man!
