Ten nearly life-size figures, Christ among them, crowd a shallow golden box as he is lowered from the cross, and his mother faints in a curve that echoes her dead son's body. Painted around 1435 for the chapel of Leuven's crossbowmen's guild, it was copied again and again, and Rogier is often called the most influential Northern painter of his century.
