Women of Algiers in Their Apartment by Eugène Delacroix
Women of Algiers in Their Apartment (1834)
Eugène Delacroix | Romanticism | Oil on canvas
Three women relax in a richly decorated room filled with colorful tiles and soft cushions, while a servant walks out of the scene. Delacroix painted this after visiting North Africa in 1832!
Did you know? Delacroix spent only about three days in Algiers, where he was allowed inside a private home and made quick sketches. He painted the final picture back in Paris, using a model dressed in clothes he had brought home. More than 100 years later, Pablo Picasso painted 15 versions of his own!
