Work by Ford Madox Brown
Work (1865)
Ford Madox Brown | Realism | Oil on canvas
Workers called navvies dig up a busy road in Hampstead, London, while all kinds of people go about their day, including a flower seller and a lady handing out religious pamphlets. Everyone has a job to do!
Did you know? Brown started this painting in 1852 and did not finish it until 1865, 13 years later! The two men watching from the side are real people: the writer Thomas Carlyle and the churchman F. D. Maurice. Brown said they "seem to be idle but work."
